Intro/Attention

Today, I'm beginning a brand new sermon series that will take us all the way through Father's Day. It's a series on love, marriage, parenting, kids, family, and finances. I've called this series Wisdom for the Family because we'll be studying selected scriptures in the Book of Proverbs. Today, we begin our study in Proverbs 5 as we study the subject, Love and Marriage. READ Proverbs 5:1-7, 15-19, 21

One of the oldest father-son talks in history is recorded in the book of Proverbs. Solomon, the world's wisest man in his day, was known throughout the surrounding nations for possessing wisdom and insight into all the affairs of men. In addition to his thousands of proverbs, he wrote more than a thousand songs and gave discourses about nature and the ways of this world.

Solomon uses phrases like this constantly: ''Hear, my son, your father's instruction...My son, do not forget...My son, be attentive to my wisdom.'' He wants his son to learn the root of all wisdom-''the fear of the Lord.'' READ Proverbs 1:7 For almost three thousand years, the father's words to his son have provided wisdom to all who would embrace them.

While some may think the ways of wisdom are stifling and behind the times, it is exactly the test of time which makes Proverbs valuable for today's seeker of truth. Proverbs contains no new insights, no hot-off-the-press theories, no latest fads. Instead, it contains the very wisdom of God, given to Solomon simply because he needed it and asked for it. The principles of wisdom will work for anyone who puts them to use. But it is only those who fear the Lord who will want follow Him.*
