Proverbs 6:6-11
Intro/Attention
This morning, we continue a sermon series I entitled Wisdom for the Family. The Book of Proverbs is full of powerful and practical principles for everyday living. Today, we're going to look at Proverbs 6 where we discover principles for our work.
God created work. Our jobs are simply part of the way that we fulfill God's purpose for our lives. Work is not part of the curse. God gave Adam and Eve jobs prior to the Fall when sin entered the world. The curse made work harder and less rewarding, but we were originally created to find joy and fulfillment in work.
The Bible has a lot to say about how we work. It speaks of the danger of laziness and reminds us of the blessing of hard work. One of the most memorable passages regarding work is found in Proverbs 6:6-11. Here, Solomon paints a picture of what it looks like to be a worker that glorifies and honors the Lord. READ TEXT
*Some people refer to Paul Railton of Consett, England, as the laziest man in the world. That would be difficult to prove, but his legal troubles certainly provide evidence that he is in the running for the title. In December of 2009, Railton was reported to the authorities by a cyclist who saw him ''walking'' his dog by driving his car slowly and holding the leash out the car window! Railton admitted that his unusual method of exercising his dog, ''Was a silly thing to do and there was an element of laziness,'' and pled guilty to a charge of ''not being in proper control of a vehicle.'' He was fined sixty-six pounds and ordered not to drive for six months.*
As our society moves further and further away from valuing hard work, we are seeing a rise in laziness. This undermines the foundations of our nation, but also the foundations of the church.
