JESUS CHRIST gave His life to save the "whosoever" of John 3:
16. Ranked among those who repented of their sins, called upon
Him for the forgiveness of their sins, and asked for the gift of
new life have been persons from all walks of life. Good people
and evil ones, illiterate and intellectuals, rich and poor,
young and old of all races have received from Him the "crown of
life."
In celebration of our nations independence let's exhume the
example of one of our many early American heros, and in
evaluating whether he was a Christian examine our own lives.
I. HIS TIMES
Perhaps there has never been a period in history when so many
outstanding men lived and participated in government at one time
than during the years our nation emerged and took on its
identity. Before America no people had ever had a part in
forging the government by which they would be ruled. A long list
of giants walked across histories stage in that hour. Their
tread was steady and in the right direction.
With rare exception these men were Christians who wanted to be
used of the Lord. Revisionists have rewritten much of our
history to omit our Christian heritage. To find our true roots
one has to go to a university library and dig in the archives.
When this is done, as it is being done by some current scholars,
our heritage is seen to be distinctly Christian in character.
