Disciples Abide (1 of 6)
Series: Disciple: Be one. Make More.
Bob Ingle
John 8:31-32
Open to John 8. That is the new series we start today. Disciple: Be One. Make More.
The NT makes pretty clear that purpose of the whole church and the mission of every local church is to bring glory to God by making disciples of Jesus Christ. That's why our mission statement is: We are a Gospel-Centered Church making disciples of Jesus Christ. If you are new to the Christian faith, or church, or the Bible, you might hear that statement and be as confused as a goat on AstroTurf.
Questions might come to your mind like: What is a disciple of Jesus? How does a person become one? How do we make other people disciples? Are there certain qualities every disciple of Jesus will possess and certain activities every disciple should participate in? Can you be a Christian and not be a disciple? And the list goes on. Over the next several weeks we'll glean the NT for answers to these questions about what true, authentic discipleship looks like.
Did you know that a person can believe they are a part of the Christian faith and in God's family, but not be? They can think they are Christians and feel confident that if they died today, they'd go to heaven, when in fact they wouldn't. 2 Corinthians 13:5: 'Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.' Paul isn't trying to get anyone to doubt their salvation. He wants everyone to be certain of it. The way to do that is to compare the actions of our life to the commands of God's Word. You see, Scripture defines discipleship and sets the standard. Over the next several weeks, we're going to examine ourselves, examine our faith, examine our actions, examine our beliefs, and see if they match up with Scripture. Let's start with this: What is a Genuine Disciple?
