JESUS CHRIST does not want you to live your life like an errant
missile, out of control and off course, with a non-functioning
guidance system needing to be destroyed. He wants to afford you
a perfect on board guidance system. This on board guidance
system is His Holy Spirit. Of the Spirit Christ said shortly
before His death, "He will guide you to all truth"
(John 16: 13).
Noted in Galatians 5: 22, 23 are areas of the truth into which
the Holy Spirit guides.
I.THE CHARACTER OF A SPIRIT FILLED LIFE GALATIANS 5 : 22
The ninth item noted in the inventory of the fruit of the spirit
is "self-control." The AKJ translates the Greek word EGKRATEIA,
"temperance." That word usually brings to mind a person who
controls his drinking habits. It is that and more.
It has to do with the mastery of the total self. It is used of
an athletes control of his body, and a Christian's refusal to
give vent to appetites, passions, and impulses which we know
(1) play havoc with our physical health,
(2) are detrimental to our mental and emotional stability, or
(3) disrupt our personal relations with others.
America has developed a "feel good mentality". If a thing feels
good at the moment, do it. Ours is a self-indulgent
culture. The mentality of the moment is "forget about moral
