Bud Wilkerson was a hall of fame coach of the Oklahoma Sooners football team. He was asked by a reporter what contribution he thought college football made toward the physical fitness in America. The reporter was kind of stunned when Coach Wilkerson said he didn't think college football made any noticeable contribution. He said, ''Here's why: In a college football game you have 22 men on the field desperately needing rest, and 50,000 people in the stands desperately needing exercise.''

You can't get in shape by watching others exercise. Sadly, in America, Christianity has become a spectator sport. We go to a church service, watch others perform, and then evaluate their performance on the way home. Many think that's all God wants or expects from them. Show up to a service, watch the show, critique the performance, and return the next week. But just as you can't get into shape by watching others exercise, you can't follow Christ by watching others follow Him. Biblical Christianity is not a spectator sport. It requires your personal participation.

Disciple literally means 'follower' or 'imitator'. All through the Gospels, Jesus said these words... ''You are truly My disciples IF...''. And then He would give the action of true disciples. You become a disciple by believing the Gospel; but you demonstrate you're a disciple by imitating Jesus. The evidence of your internal salvation can be found in the obedient external actions of your life. Jesus was telling us that discipleship demands participation. Spiritual couch potatoes are not disciples of Jesus. Sidelines sitters are not disciples of Jesus. True discipleship demands action and participation.
