Disciples Love (3 of 6)
Series: Disciple: Be One. Make More.
Bob Ingle
John 13:34-35
A young college student thought he'd get an easy A by taking an ornithology class. Ornithology is the study of birds. He was doing great until the professor threw a bit of a curveball for the final exam. On the test paper were 25 pictures. Each picture had nothing but a pair of bird legs. The directions said, ''Identify each bird by their legs.'' The student was just enraged. He'd never heard such a thing. He stormed up to the teacher and said, ''I'd rather take an F than take this ridiculous test!'' The professor said, ''Very well, young man, I'll be glad to give you an F. What's your name?'' The student pulled up his pant leg and said, ''You figure it out!''
We're in a series that is designed to help us see what real discipleship is and what real discipleship looks like. Jesus made it very clear that not everyone who says they belong to Him actually belong to Him. In their life there is evidence or proof they are authentic believers, genuine Christ-followers. No one becomes a Disciple through right behavior. It is through right belief. We place our hope, faith, and trust in the finished work of Jesus on His cross and His resurrection from the dead. We believe He died in our place for our sin and rose victoriously over death, hell, and the Devil. Through His death, we died to sin. In His life, we now live for God.
But the NT tells us that if we believe the Gospel, it changes us. The evidence we have truly believed is a changed life. Over the last several weeks, we've been looking at the evidence or proof of a person's life that is a genuine disciple of Jesus. So far, we've seen that...
Genuine Disciples Obey. Jesus said, ''If you love Me, you'll obey Me.''
Genuine Disciples Surrender themselves. Jesus said, ''Anyone who wants to be My disciple must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Me.'' Surrender life, plans, will, desires, mind, body.
