Colossians 3:12-13
Turn in your bible to Colossians 3. We're talking about outward proofs that the Bible says every disciple of Jesus will display that shows they have been transformed by the Gospel. Today we're talking about forgiveness. Disciples forgive.
I heard about a worship leader and a pastor who didn't get along at all. The music minister would lead songs disagreeing with what the pastor was saying. For instance, one Sunday the pastor preached on the importance of Christians moving out to share the gospel with others. Immediately after the message the music director led the hymn 'We Shall Not Be Moved'. The next week the pastor preached on the importance of everyone giving more money, and the music director followed it with the hymn 'Jesus Paid It All'. The next week the pastor preached on the dangers of gossip and the song that followed was 'I Love To Tell the Story'. The pastor got so frustrated that Sunday night, he threatened to resign if the music didn't change. The music director followed that with 'O, Why Not Tonight?' Finally, the pastor was so fed up that the next Sunday he said, ''I've had it with this church. Jesus is leading me to leave and go to another church.'' The minister of music stood and said, ''Let's all sing 'What a Friend We Have In Jesus'''!
Because we're all sinners, we will have plenty of opportunity to be forgiven, but because we live around other sinners we will also have plenty of opportunities to practice forgiveness. While it's true that living with unforgiven sin in your life can damage you, walking around with an unforgiving heart can be equally destructive. What we're going to see today is God demands that forgiven people be forgiving people. And when forgiven people refuse to be forgiving people it damages their life and it damages the church.
