Our Scripture Reading for Today Comes From Exodus 20:1-3

Last year I read the book 12 Rules for Life by Jordan Peterson. Its popularity was fascinating to me, and it was fascinating to Jordan Peterson, also. He was talking about the results and said, ''I paid attention to the results, and thought about the reasons for that answer's disproportionate success. Perhaps I struck the right balance between the familiar and the unfamiliar while formulating the rules. Perhaps people were drawn to the structure that such rules imply. Perhaps people just like lists.'' His list was obviously impactful, but the list we are going to be talking about over the next 10 weeks has affected Hebrew culture and really all of Western culture. Kevin DeYoung says, ''It's no exaggeration to say that these Ten Words handed at Mount Sinai have been the most influential law code ever given.'' They have been the bedrock of western thought and law.
DeYoung mentions an article by famous British historian Tom Holland who has done a lot of study of the classics, i.e., Greek and Roman thought. Now, we obviously know that we received a lot from them, but Holland was saying in this article, ''We are not like these people, our ethics, our understanding of human value is different.'' He is writing in this article about how much of our thought has been framed by Christianity. This is something that modern Western people struggle to understand.
