Our Scripture Reading for Today Comes From Exodus 20:8-11
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Well, I missed you all last week. I was leading a group to Israel, and it was an amazing trip. This was my 4th time to go to Israel, and it really does keep getting better. And for those of you who travel, you learn many skills, but one thing that you learn while traveling is how to put together a delicious and well-balanced meal out of gas station food, and last Saturday in Israel we all got to use that skill because of this command. It was the Sabbath, and basically everything in Israel was closed. Now obviously here in America we don’t observe the Sabbath in the same kind of way. In Israel, for the most part, everything kind of shuts down. For example, when we got to our hotel on the Sabbath, one of the elevators was on Sabbath mode which means it still works, but it stops on every floor because one of the Sabbath restrictions is that you can’t build a fire, and the Rabbis teach that pushing the floor button on an elevator which completes a circuit is like making a fire and so it’s off limits.
?So, obviously this ancient command means something in Israel, but does this law have anything to offer us? Does it teach us anything, or is it something that as Christians we can kind of just ignore? It’s also interesting that every one of the Ten Commandments is actually repeated in the New Testament, and in fact, ...
