17 ''You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.''

There is a fascinating story in the Gospels (it appears in Matthew, Mark and Luke) where Jesus interacts with a rich man. The man comes up to Jesus and says, ''What must I do to inherit eternal life?'' Of course, you would expect Jesus being a Christian to say, ''Believe in me. I am the Messiah,'' but He doesn't. He says, ''Obey the commandments.'' The guy responds with a lot of confidence and says, ''Well of course, I have obeyed the commandments. I have obeyed them since I was a child.'' Then Jesus says, ''Well, there is one thing you lack. Sell all you possess, and give it to the poor.'' When Jesus said this the guys tone and posture changed. The Bible says that he went away sad. Now we don't exactly know what this guy had in mind in this moment, the law, the command of Christ got to him. He couldn't stand against it, he lost all of his confidence, and walked away sad, and the text even says, ''for he had many possessions.''
This kind of experience is exactly what Paul had in mind in Romans 7. I am actually going to read this in the NLT. ''9 At one time I lived without understanding the law. But when I learned the command not to covet, for instance, the power of sin came to life, 10 and I died. So I discovered that the law's commands, which were supposed to bring life, brought spiritual death instead.'' So, Paul is voicing out loud the experience of the rich young ruler. ''Before I understood the law, I thought I was alive. I thought I had obeyed every law. I always kept the Sabbath. I never committed adultery. I did everything I was supposed to do. I was alive according to the law, and then I understood the law about covetousness and ...
