The Invitation (1 of 9)
Series: Uncommon Sense ?
Josh Malone
Proverbs 1:1-7, 9:1-18
UNCOMMON- Are you ever alarmed at the lack of wisdom on display in the world? - Read the statistics on marriage and finances... go on social media and watch how poorly people use the gift of words, watch how people use and abuse power. -- The world suffers for a lack of wisdom... its uncommon.
If we were to go around the room this morning and ask... ''Do you have any regrets? Are there any decisions in your life you wish you could go back and undo?''
No doubt the answer would be UH, YEAH, BIG TIME. -- Everyone has decisions they wish the can re-do, everyone else is a liar. We've all made sinful choices and unwise choices. Much of our poor decisions in life are rooted in not doing the WISE THING.
Sometimes answers are black and white and we need wisdom to choose the right thing and not the wrong thing. Sometimes answers are more grey, and we need wisdom to navigate those waters. -- Wisdom is critical to living a life without regret.
Many of the things you regret may have to do with... friendships ruined, bad financial decisions, misusing words, work ethic, poor choices in dealing with sexual temptation- -- Wisdom can help with these issues and many more.
The next several weeks we are going to be in Proverbs, a book all about wisdom. King Solomon is the key figure who wrote much and was the chief compiler of much of the book.
Solomon is known as the wisest man (other than Jesus) to ever live. (1 Kings 3)
Proverbs is a well known book that covers a variety of topics. Friendship, speech, marriage, parenting, sexual purity, stewardship, justice, laziness, guidance, self-control, etc.
The aim of Proverbs is to help us become wise and grow in wisdom. -- It is written from the perspective of a father to a son. - So the reader has to put think in that terms. It's applicable to everyone, you just have to understand who the original audience was.
