Proverbs 6:6-11
ILLUS. - Labor Day- Malone's Supermarket - Work was like play.
First job- loading clay pigeons - Getting paid! Felt more like work! Stress.
Our culture has tended to always value hard work. (Affirm) -- Work is a good thing! In fact the Bible tells us we are made to be productive!
Gen. 1 and 2- Imago Dei- The first humans were told to SUBDUE the earth, put in the garden and told to work it. - Work and productivity are a part of what it means to be human.
Gen. 3- The world we live in is fallen. We can idolize work, over work, we can be lazy... the point is brokenness in our lives shows up in all sorts of ways.
Gen. 3:15- Christ came to redeem us, to save us from our sin and brokenness. When we trust Christ we begin to progressively be more and more into His image. This is the great work of restoration. -- We are recovering and pursuing God's design for life. -- This even includes work. We want to be good stewards, wise workers... productive people.
The Book of Proverbs helps us recover and pursue God's design in life, even work.
Proverbs explicitly warns against one the pitfalls that will rob us of being the good stewards, and wise workers we should be... LAZINESS. In fact Proverbs addresses the sluggard, the lazy slacker, multiple times. It uses comedy and sarcasm.
Today we are going to see how the Bible describes this person so that we can learn how to avoid and fight laziness. We want to be productive, faithful stewards and workers.
Maybe you wish ___ was here today. - Proverbs is for all of us. If you have a sin nature, you have a lazy bone. Anyone can struggle with this, some may more than others. Think of laziness like a spectrum.
If we are going to be wise and become wiser when we look at Proverbs we have to realize... it's addressing us, not simply our neighbor. -- So let's grow in wisdom together.
