I Thirst (5 of 7)

John 19:28-29
INTRODUCTION
When you think through the events of the Bible, one of the common themes that you don't expect to find... Is the relationship between God and water. Yet, it is there...
In the second sentence of the Bible, it says, ''And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.''
- God creates the water. Sets their boundaries. Guides where they flow.
- In Genesis 6, God brought down rain for forty days and forty nights.
- When God delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, he parted the Red Sea.
- When the Israelites were wandering in the wilderness, thirsty... God gave them water from a rock.
- In the days of Elijah, God brought a drought for 3 years... And then sends rain to Elijah as he showed up the prophets of the false god, Baal.
- In Jesus' first miracle, he turned water into wine.
- Jesus walked on the water.
- Jesus calmed the waters in a storm.
Psalm 29:3 says it best, [3] The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over many waters.
In Colossians 1, ''... all things were created through [Jesus] and for him. [17] And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.''
And yet... Listen to these words of Jesus from the cross... Our text for this morning.
John 19 says, [28] After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), ''I thirst.'' [29] A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.
Jesus... The one who holds all things together... The one who created and sustains the very water that covers this earth... On the cross, he is deathly thirsty.
There is something incredibly profound about this: the humility of Jesus.
But there is also something deeply heartbreaking about this: the suffering of Jesus.
[28] After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said ...
