INTRODUCTION: [30] When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ''It is finished,'' and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
''It is finished.'' -- This is the sixth of the seven phrases Jesus spoke from the cross.
''It is finished.'' Three words in English. In the original language in which the NT was written (Greek), it is just one word. The word is tetelestai.
You've heard the saying, ''a picture is worth a thousand words'' Well, I would say that this ''word is worth a thousand sermons.''So much could be said of this word, ''Finished.''

Tim Keller often says, ''There is nothing you can do to make God love you more. There is nothing you could do that can make him love you less.'' We can affirm this statement, because Jesus said it is finished.

The word that Jesus spoke, according to John, is the word ''Tetelestai.'' This is an economic term, which means ''your debt is paid in full.'' The bill has been taken care of.
In the first century, there was a common practice of called ''debtor's prison.''
If someone owed a large debt. They could be thrown into debtor's prison. Cannot be released until your debt has been paid. The problem is, how can you pay back the debt if you're in prison?The reason you are in debtor's prison, is because you couldn't even pay off the debt when you were free! But now, you certainly cannot pay the debt from prison. You're completely helpless.
The only way you can get out is of someone pays off your debt. If this happened, you might receive a receipt that said, ''Tetelestai. Your debt is paid in full.''
If you have that receipt. Then it is a proof of your freedom... You are no longer ...
