There is a great episode of the show ''Everybody Loves Raymond'' in which Ray and his wife Debra are troubled to hear that their daughter, Ally, is being bullied by another girl at school. They wrestle with what to do about the situation and how best to protect their daughter from the girl bullying her. As they speak to Ally's teacher about the situation, they are shocked to learn that they have been confused all along: their daughter is not being bullied. Their daughter is the one bullying the other girl!

The realization disturbs and shocks them. For the remainder of the episode, they try to make sense of how their daughter could be a bully, where she could have gotten the bullying spirit from and how they as parents should deal with this troubling news. Like most episodes of that show, it is quite funny how it all unfolds. Behind it all, however, is a very real and serious phenomenon that all parents and, indeed, all people, must deal with: the shocking reality of sin in ourselves and in our children.

Parents sometimes say and more often think something like this concerning their children: ''Not my little angel!'' We say that to convince ourselves that our children are, in fact, somehow not as tainted by sin as other children or that there are some sins our children are incapable of committing. It is a comforting act of self-deceit, but, in the end, it is just that: self-deceit.

Oh, we can easily play the odds and comfort ourselves with the knowledge that our children are unlikely to commit certain particularly heinous crimes. We watch with horrified amazement a show like, ''15 Shocking Crimes - Too Young to Kill,'' which chronicles shocking murders by children. Or we read disturbing things like Listverse's ''Top 10 Evil Children,'' a ...
