Lie #10: ''I Can Teach My Children to Love Jesus While Neglecting Jesus' Bride.'' (10 of 10)
Series: Lies Parents Tell Themselves
Wyman Richardson
Ephesians 5:25-30; Philippians 2:5-11
I would like to ask you to imagine with me that your son gets married. The wedding is beautiful. Everything goes off without a hitch. You and your spouse finally leave the reception with feelings of joy, contentment and exuberance.
It is late when you finally decide to turn in for the night. You change our of your wedding clothes into your pajamas, cut off all the lights and lay down in bed. Just as you go to shut your eyes, there is a knock at your door.
''Who on earth could that be?'' you mutter as you make your way down the hall to the front door. You crack the door to see your son standing, alone, outside. Alarmed, you throw open the door and say, ''Son, are you ok? What's wrong? Where is Jenny?''
Your son walks into the house. He is smiling. He seems relaxed. ''Wrong?'' he says. ''Nothing's wrong.''
The remainder of the conversation progresses in a surreal manner.
''Where is Jenny?'' you repeat.
''Oh, she's at the airport boarding the plane for the honeymoon.''
''What? Why aren't you with her?''
''With her?'' he laughs. ''You don't have to go on a honeymoon together to be married.''
''Son, what on earth are you talking about?''
''Just what I said. You don't have to go on a honeymoon to be married. It was a nice service. I'm thrilled to be married. Now I'm just ready to get back to my room and my life and my job.''
''Son, you're not making sense! You're moving back here...into your own room?!''
''Well, yeah, you don't have to live together to be married.''
''You're not going to live together? You're not going to honeymoon together? Wait, where's your wedding ring? I saw her put it on your finger just hours ago!''
''Wedding ring? Oh, c'mon! You don't have to wear a wedding ring to be married.''
Finally, sheer exasperation sets ...
