MOTHER: ROCKING THE ROLE

JESUS CHRIST echoed the command of our Heavenly Father when He
quoted the Old Testament challenge to "honor your father and
your mother." This command needs current compliance.
This is the occasion when we pause to honor mom, who has been
our servant-in-waiting, constant companion, car pool driver,
listening post, counselor, and scape goat.
The important role played by mothers is indicated by the
appearance of the word "mother" or "mothers" nearly 300 times in
the Bible.
The one we call "mom" has willingly walked through the valley of
the shadow of death to give us birth. Out of gratitude our love
should be shown her all the days of her life. Wisely Solomon
appealed to us not to forget her when she is old.
Mother's Day was once a given for the pulpit. It was an easy
sermon to prepare. Now it is one of the most difficult days on
which to preach. Somehow along the way somebody has rocked the
role. The role of mother has been diminished, devalued, and
often disgraced. Some have - - -
A.TRIVIALIZED THE ROLE
Sexual promiscuity is rampant. Our government treats youth like
young animals in heat and rushes to give them condoms. Potential
mothers are treated like play things by some young men. Some
young women treat their potential for parenthood flippantly.
The Jewish Talmud asks a strategic question and answers it:
"Who is best taught? He who has first learned from his mother."
