JESUS CHRIST wants to give you a sense of well being, of
self-esteem, of self-worth, a sense of significance.
That being true why is it that so many people live deflated
lives in a state of futility? There is a reason.
Several years ago Larry Mize burst onto the pages of sports
immortality by winning the prestigious Masters Golf Tournament
in his home town of Augusta, Georgia. He did it in perhaps the
most dramatic manner anyone has ever won on the course of
courses. He sank a dramatic long range put to win in a playoff.
Such an athletic achievement would be a heady feat for anyone.
Logically, he had a great sense of accomplishment. Fame and
fortune followed.
Soon thereafter his game began to go down hill. He floundered
and sank into a sense of futility. After months of despair he
talked with a Christian brother about his state of mind. Finally
the friend asked, "Larry, from what do you get your
significance?"
In response to Larry's question he explained what he meant by
that question. He interpreted for Larry how he had, like anyone
might, lived off his victory at the Masters. The victory gave
him a sense of worth. However, with the passing of time, the
absence from the headlines, and no major victories he had lost
his sense of significance. His friend further explained that
tomaintain a sense of significance it must be based on something
lasting.
