Roughly two weeks ago today, historic flooding hit our area. No one knows exactly the number of homes that have been affected; perhaps as many as 100,000 or more. The number of people impacted could easily approach a quarter of a million when you take extended families into account. These have been difficult and dark days, but in the middle of it all, there have been some bright spots, and I want to give you an illustration of this.
There was a family traveling from Houston, Texas, and they were on their way to Disney World. As you know, the route from Houston to Disney World goes right through our area. As they were coming this way, the rain got heavier and heavier, and as the Lord would ordain it, they actually got held up in the greater Baton Rouge area by the floods when interstate 12 was closed. Now, the father in this family is a doctor, and the wife is also a medical specialist; I think she perhaps is a nurse or something along that line. They got stopped at about the Juban Road exit, which is where I live, just off Juban Road. They heard that there was a church just off of the Juban Road exit that had been turned into a makeshift shelter. They were bringing into that church people from convalescent centers, older people, many of whom needed medical attention. That's Christ Community Church. Many of you may know where this is, just off Juban. I want to show you a picture of this family [on the screen]. The doctor and his wife and their children just began to serve there in the shelter, and they stayed for two or three days, I suppose as long as it took for the highways to get open. The pastor there, Willis, told me that this doctor was just tireless, and the family was, as they ministered to the needy. When the roads opened up, they got back into their van and they turned around, and went back to Houston. Here's what they said: ''This was better than Disney World.'' That ma ...
