Desires. We all have them and the next 3 sins we are going to talk about in the next 4 weeks, we are going to break for Mother's Day, are all tied to desires. The fact of the matter is because of the Fall our desires get warped. We desire the wrong things or we pervert good desires. Sin has warped even our desires. This week we are looking at a sin tied to desire... it's the sin of ENVY.
Envy is a sin that will kill you from the inside out. On the outside you may be successful and have life that others may envy, but on the inside you may be dying of envy. Envy will poison your life so that you don't enjoy what you have. It will poison your relationships. It will turn you into someone you don't want to be and reveal the worst parts of you. It is an ugly and destructive sin.
Sins like envy are all about what you WANT. That drives at the very heart of us. Only the gospel can get so deep as to change us at our core so that our desires are effected. Ultimately the gospel is the hope in all these sins we battle.
So this morning I want us to look at a case study with a man named Saul. The first king of Israel. He was a man that we see both envy and jealousy in and we see the destruction it brings to his life... and then I want to show you what the Bible says about how to attack the sin of envy.
The Context:
Saul was the first king of Israel. He was selected by God to be king of His people. That's quite an honor!- 1 Sam. 9:1-2 tells us that he came from a family that had wealth in his history, he was the most handsome man in Israel, and the tallest of the people. In other words--- he looked like a king.- You hear people say ''he looks like a president.'' - He looked like a king. ?
In 1 Sam. 13 he was preparing to battle the Philistines and wanted to seek God's favor, offer sacrifice, before the battle. Samuel tells him to wait 7 days for him to ...
