Morning church!

Turn to Exodus 20. We're on the second of the Ten commandments-

As you learn more about these commandments- you're more deeply aware of the fact these aren't the way we come to God or maintain our relationship with God-

Because the better we know these commandments- the more we realize of how often we break them! They make us more aware of how much we need Jesus.

Last week we learned that we should have no other God's before him. That's about who we worship. The second commandment is about HOW we worship.

4 ''You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

In 21st century America it's pretty uncommon for us to see people bowing down to idols and you might think that the second commandment is pretty irrelevant to us.

We're pretty bad at obeying the commandments about lying and stealing an honoring our parents. but idolatry? Hopefully we have at least that one pretty well squared away!

But I was reading about a pastor who visited a rural part of India- and he was amazed by the number of idols. On every street corner and hillside there was some kind of shine dedicated to one of many different gods. People even carried little gods in their pockets to bless them. It seemed like there were as many gods as there were people.

So he walks into this large hut with a thatched roof so speak to a group of believers- here's a group of former witch doctors and idolators and people who were formerly very superstitious.
