MASTERING MATERIALISM
PART I
(MATTHEW 5 - 7)
JESUS CHRIST said, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on
earth ..." (Matthew 6: 19, 20).
He further said, Unless your righteousness exceeds the
righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means
enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5: 20).
Therefore, in order to know what the righteousness is that ours
must exceed, let's consider it. It necessitates the right view
of six aspects of life.
1. THE RIGHT VIEW OF SELF 5: 1 - 12
The Pharisees were proud, egocentric, and self-centered. These
verses evidence that the type of righteousness that exceeds this
comes from a broken spirit, sorrow over sin, meekness, and a
real appetite for righteousness.
2. THE RIGHT VIEW OF THE WORLD5: 13 - 16
The Pharisees had become corrupted by the world and left
sightless by the spiritual darkness.
We must be salt to prevent corruption and light to dispel
it.
3. THE RIGHT VIEW OF GOD'S WORD5: 17 - 20
The Pharisees had developed their own world view. We must
develop a Biblical world view.
4. THE RIGHT VIEW OF MORAL ISSUES5: 21 - 48
The Pharisees had developed a rigid code of external conduct:
don't kill, don't commit adultery, etc.
Moral issues are more than what you do or don't do; they are
what you think and what you don't think.
5. THE RIGHT VIEW OF RELIGIOUS ISSUES 6: 1 - 18
The Pharisees were fasting, praying, and giving. However, they
were very hypocritical.
It is proper to do these things but with the right motive and
spirit.
6. THE RIGHT VIEW OF WEALTH AND NECESSITIES 6: 19 - 34
The Pharisees were laying up for themselves treasures o ...
