1 Peter 3:18-22


18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.

21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

You may have heard the story of Louie Zamperini- which is a story of incredible suffering. ?
He was a phenomenal athlete and would have beaten Roger Bannister to the 4 min mile were it not for WW2.

When the 1940 Summer Olympics were cancelled he enlisted in army as an airman.

Many American soldiers at the time were so terrified of what would happen after being shot down- either by sharks in the water or torture by the Japanese if they survived- that many decided to stay in their planes when shot down and die rather than try to survive.

After Louie's plane was crashed in the middle of the pacific he would spend 47 days on a raft and then two years in prison camps.

He would later remark that he would rather have killed himself than survive.

It's unlikely that any of us will suffer to the extreme that Louie did- but the story is so powerful because we all can relate to the fear of suffering.

What if I get sick? What if someone I'm close to gets in a terrible accident? What if my marriage fails? What if I lose my job and go bankrupt?

Many of you have experienced those things.
