TRAITS OF A PRE-CHRISTMAS CHARACTER WORTHY OF IMITATING
JOHN 1: 6 - 8

JESUS CHRIST deserves our adoration and devotion. Appropriately
great orchestras and choirs together declare His birth. Poets
pin their best lines in proclamation of His coming to earth. The
best strokes of premier painters are reserved to reveal His
glory.
Every generation has offered a new corp of committed confidants
who follow Him with commendable cadence. The role call of
martyrs who have offered their lives in His name grows ever
longer.
There is one devotee worthy of our emulation. Of him Jesus said,
"Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has
not risen one greater than John the Baptist..." (Matt. 11:11).
Remember him? This first cousin of Jesus Christ is one
pre-Christmas character that often gets overlooked. His birth
was announced to Zachariah, his father, nine months in advance.
This encounter with the celestial being left Zachariah mute.
Shortly before the miracle baby's birth Zachariah scrawled out
the name "John," his speech returned, and he praised the Lord.
Before John's birth, while still in his mother's womb, he
responded with elation when Mary, the mother-to-be of Jesus,
visited his parents and told of the forthcoming birth of Jesus.
He jumped joy in his mother's womb. This stresses the
importanceof pre-natal care.
Jesus later spoke of John as being "great." With Christ what
constitutes greatness? Let's ex ...
