Funeral Sermon - His Eye is on the Sparrow
Zach Terry
Matthew 6:26
INTRODUCTION: I will never forget the first time I went to visit Miss Cassie. She was out on her porch where she liked to sit and watch the birds.
I really didn't know what to expect. Here I was visiting the oldest living member of our church. Over 100 years old. What on earth would we talk about? What would she say? Perhaps she had some ancient wisdom to impart to me? Maybe she could tell me about some great hero she met along her journey. Maybe she could impart to me her secret to a long and happy life.
I don't know how many visits we had there on her front porch, but it occurred to me recently that she never told me her secret, she never imparted any ancient wisdom to me. But after my last visit with her in the hospital it occurred to me - she had told me her secret, every time I visited, I just hadn't heard it.
Her secret can be found in a few words spoken by Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew chapter 6 verse 26.
Matthew 6:26

What do we learn as we consider the sparrows?
1. Sparrows Sing they Don't Squawk
I always wanted Cassie to say something profound. But her impact wasn't so much in what she said, but it was in all that she DIDN'T say.
You see in all those visits, I never heard an unkind word, never heard a complaint. I never heard gossip, nor boasting. Like the matriarchs of old she would let her yes be yes and her no be no, like the very oracle of God. But not in some unearthly kind of way - she was not ''holier than thou'' or intimidating. She was kind.
The wise Solomon said it so well Life and death are in the power of the tongue.
