Wrath Revealed (2 of 23)
Series: The Book of Romans
Josh Malone
Romans 1:18-23
Today’s and next week’s topics are critical as we move forward in Romans and they are critical to having a biblical worldview and understanding how to serve people in our city.
Atheism, agnosticism, idolatry, unreached peoples, sexual sins, homosexuality in particular are all addressed by the text the next two weeks. These are all things that our culture has lots of questions, debates, confusion about.
Today we are going to see that we have a problem. –We have sinned against our loving Creator and are deserving of His just wrath, and we’re w/o excuse before God. That’s a problem. - By sin I mean there are thoughts, ideas, choices, behaviors, attitudes we have that are offensive to a holy God. – People don’t like to think about this.
ILLUS. In fact, this week I read an article in the NYT called “Raising Children without the Concept of Sin.” – The lady that wrote the piece is someone who was raised in some type of Christian context but now is an atheist. It was a very sad article. – But her daughter overheard the word and asked “What’s sin?”- But she and her atheist husband have decided to make their own moral code. They have right and wrong, their own “sins” but do not believe in God or the biblical concept of sin.
I’m not trying to pick on this writer. We’ve all been guilty of skirting the issue of sin at some point in our lives in different ways. – It’s truth we may not like to hear but need to. What God, not what I, say about sin is what’s important. It’s critical.
Last week was the good news. This week is the bad news. To fully appreciate the good news, we need to see how bad things are. – This week Paul is going to show us just how bad things are... how sinful and without excuse we are and what that means. (Who’s Your One?)
