Romans 1:24-32
Today we are diving into a text that shows us the working out of God's wrath and our sin. Due to our sinfulness, specifically our idolatry of rejecting and replacing God in our hearts... man has been given over to a host of sins and God's judgment is revealed in our present day.
Today is really about how sinful man really is apart from God's grace. - Not some people, all people. Not a certain kind of sinner, but all of us are sinners. - We are going to see the Apostle Paul name some very specific sins that manifest themselves among fallen humanity. -
I want to be clear... Paul's point today is that mankind in general is sinful, specifically Gentiles, generally all of us. There are certain ways our depravity has manifested itself. We are all prone to idolatry... and our idolatry leads to a cycle of sin that can only be broken by the gospel.
Who's Your One?
Last week in 1:18-23 we saw that the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against our sin and then man naturally suppresses the truth about God. We learned we are without excuse before God. Even though God has made Himself known through creation in some ways... we have rejected and replaced God in our hearts.
The core sin... is idolatry... the rejection of the true God as God and the giving over of our hearts to other gods, namely OURSEVLES. - This leads to God's judgment, it leads to us spinning off into other sin... and the only cure is the GOSPEL.
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
