The last five weeks we have been hanging out in the first three chapters of Romans. These three chapters show us our COMMON PROBLEM. We have sinned against a holy God. - All of humanity shares a SINKING BOAT.

Today Paul tells us how God has solved this problem. - Romans 3:21-26 has been called the most important text in all the Bible. Douglas Moo points out how Martin Luther, said of this paragraph ''the chief point... of the whole Bible.''

If our hearts do not grasp this passage then our souls are in trouble. - Our souls swing on the truth of these verses.

All of humanity has this problem we've discussed called SIN. -Here's the thing.. humanity largely walks around not thinking about this problem. - We do life, raise our kids, go to work, go to play... and we don't spend a lot of time thinking about God.

ILLUS. - In fact... I was reading an article in the NYT this week about smart phone usage. The author was writing about weening himself off his phone. He employed an ''expert'' who had studied and written on how the brain interacts w/ smart phones. She told him not to be surprised if he experienced existential thoughts and depression in weening himself off. - In other words... we numb ourselves w/ info., games, communication ... to the point we rarely think deeply.

The Bible wants us to pause, turn off the phone, and think deeply about what matters.

ILLUS. - Check Engine Light -- God's Word offers us warnings about our life, about reality. If we ignore those warnings, we will certainly find ourselves in trouble.

Romans 1-3 raises a series of lights going off... trying to get our attention to deal with the symptoms all around us of our sin and brokenness. - Now, Paul wants to show us exactly what has been done to solve our crisis. -- Today we are going to see how in Christ... the problem of sin has been dealt with and how sinners can receiv ...
