Romans 4:13-25
ILLUS.- Last night I did something dumb. I opened my phone and begin to look at some photos and videos of the kids from a 1 to 2 plus years ago. - Watch the video and you know the baby voice is going away on Cannon. Seeing the funny faces they used to make. - It was like literally watching time pour out of a glass in front of me. You can't put it back in. But wow, the tech we have today to at least remember... to see... is powerful. I keep tons of pictures of videos on my phone. - It comes in handy sometimes. I remember visiting the late Mrs. Billie Ruth Boylston and her asking... ''Can I see a picture of those kids?'' No reason to pull out a faded pic from a wallet. Here's a perfect digital copy! - We can do that and people who haven't seen the kids before or in a while no what they look like. Pictures and videos are powerful tools!
In Rom. 4 Paul gives us something like a pic or a video... he gives us the story of Abraham. It serve as a picture, a video, a template to explain what faith looks like. - He wants you to identify with Abraham. If you can't ... he wants you to see your need for faith like Abraham. He wants paints for us a picture of FAITH, TRUST.
We live in a society that we find trusting to be hard. We don't have a lot of faith in systems, institutions, etc. Why? We live in a broken world and we've been let down. Our world is cynical and sarcastic. - Yet the God of the Bible invites us to BELIEVE to TRUST... not blindly, not like a leap in a dark... but to trust that what He says is true is true. To believe that He will do what He says and keep His promise.
The Bible says without faith it is impossible to please Him. In fact, if we don't believe we can't be made right with God. We can only be declared righteous by God if we BELIEVE. We have to have faith. Specifically faith in Jesus Christ.
