There's ancient view of marriage and there's a modern view of marriage. The ancient view of marriage is often seen as simply functional. He tells her what he wants and she obeys. In the ancient view of marriage, marriage is seen as little more than simply the place where you can legitimately have children. The ancient view conjures up images of boredom and routine and passionless life. Think robots, if you will.

But there's also a modern view of marriage. The modern view of marriage pushes back against the passionless and routine view of marriage offered by the ancient view. The modern view centers on romantic fulfillment. And it's exciting and thrilling and chick-flicks. We can summarize the modern view with Tom Cruise's quote from Jerry Maguire: ''You Complete Me. Of course, we remember his love interest in the movie responding, ''You had me at hello.'' That is the modern view of marriage.

Contrary to what many think, the Bible isn't simply the ancient, functional view of marriage. Yes, the Bible teaches marriage is the place to have children but the Bible also include elements of the romantic view. The Bible candidly teaches the functionality of marriage but also advocated a robust, durable spiritual oneness that eclipses our society's worship of romantic love.
