The Believer and Obedience to God (3 of 5)
Series: Rest Assured

1 John 2:1-6, 2:28-3:3
We are in a series in 1 John called Rest Assured: Being Certain of Your Salvation. We are looking at how 1 John shows believers they can know they are in fact genuinely saved Having been in the ministry several years I have encountered lots of believers battling doubt. At the same time, some people doubt... because they are not genuinely born again. 1 John is a book that can help us sort through all of that and gain assurance or to discover real faith in Christ. Last week we talked about how the believer relates to sin. The believer admits their sin, we know we are sinners, at the same time the believer hates and turns from sin. We have a new nature that doesn't want to walk in sin.
Today we are going to look at the other side of the coin, more from the positive angle. When I say a believer doesn't ''practice sin.'' We think of the idea of avoiding doing evil, wrong things. - This is true. - But it is also true that sin is simply disobeying God. A believer doesn't just avoid evil things... a believer, we will see today, pursues doing the right thing, pursues obeying God. - Obedience is about more than not messing up, not doing vile things. Obedience to God is about aligning our lives with His Word.
Look with me at 1 John 2:1-6 as we see how the believer relates to God's Commands...
1 John 2:1-6- My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
The first two verses here are sort of closing out the last section on the believer and their relationship with sin. - It's also a reminder of what a believer is trusting in for salvation. Believer's do not rest in our obedience for our salvation. We rest in Christ. We obey Christ because we ...
