1 John 2:15-17
We are finishing a series called Rest Assured: Being Certain of Your Salvation. (Summary). Today we are going to talk about the believer and worldliness.
Being a believer in Christ is strange in the world and always has been. - To follow Christ means He is Lord of your life and the treasure of your heart. - To know Him is to love Him supremely. - This will lead to making decisions that are simply crazy in the world's eyes.
Believers, see things different than the rest of the world. - Believers have a new value system... everything is upside down from the rest of the world.
Ex.... missionaries, how Christians use money, our moral standards, etc.
If Jesus Christ is your Lord, if He is your treasure... you are not going to fit in. You are not going to have smooth sailing in this life. - You are opposite the world.
In 1 John, John tells us believers are marked by a different relationship with the world system than other people in the world have. - We are swimming upstream.
1 John 2:15-17- 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world-the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life-is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
We see here a command that is filled with warning. - The command is simply ... DO NOT LOVE THE WORLD. What does that mean? Aren't we supposed to love the world?
When John speaks of the world he is not speaking of people, the environment, buildings.- John's not saying it's wrong to love your lost friend. He's not saying you have to wear a potato sack, delete all your music, not have a TV, and live in a convent.
John is speaking of the world system that is marred by sin and brokenness. The ...
