Today we are going to talk about God's design for the relationship between the wife and the husband in the home, in particular how the wife is to relate to her husband. Next week we will be looking at how the husband is to the wife.

We live in a culture where there is a lot of debate about gender and gender roles. There are some in our culture who seem to want to completely erase any distinction between male and female. However, we learn from the Bible that God has created male and female in His image. We are created with dignity, value, worth, and purpose within our gender. God has a design for us. He has a purpose for us. Our gender is not insignificant, it matters to God.

This morning we are going to see that God's design for the home is for the husband to LEAD and for the wife to submit to his leadership. - This flies in the face of a lot of contemporary culture that presents men as bumbling morons.

ILLUS. Homer Simpson-itis - Doh! - That's how a lot of people look at men in the home. Yet God has designed men to lead.

Some would also stereotype women wrongly, and God has designed women to be key to health and functionality of the home.

The husband wife relationship begins with mutual understanding, and a commitment to and reverence for Christ. - When Jesus is being worshipped as Lord in the home, a husband will be motivated to lead well, and a wife will embrace her role as well.

Our goal this morning is not really to battle the culture but to lay out God's design over these weeks and that will naturally be counter-cultural, but where culture has it right, that's called common grace.
