John 11
Death. -Every single person in this room will die. - Good morning, welcome to church.
Seriously, we all know we are going to die but we don't like to think or talk about. Just like we all know we could get sick, we could get hurt. We get this... but we don't think or talk much about. - We get health insurance and life insurance, and move on.
In Job 18:14- One of the people rebuking Job... a ''friend'' talks about how the wicked die and he refers to death as ''the king of terrors.'' Death is universally the king of all fears. The Bible says in Hebrews 2:15 that apart from Christ that through the fear of death we are subject to life-long slavery.
Leo Tolstoy, the Russian author, who wrote War and Peace and Anna Ka-ren-nina, said the question that nearly drove him to suicide at the age of 50 was... ''Is there any meaning in my life that the inevitable death awaiting me does not destroy.''
Death reminds us we are human, we are sinners, we are broken and there is judgment. Sickness, trials, and pain remind us... death is real. --- The good news of the Bible is Jesus came to CONFRONT not to AVOID the issues of sin, sickness, pain, suffering, and death.
In John 11 we read of Jesus's revealing himself as the Resurrection and the Life.
In the face of sickness, pain, suffering, and death... we need answers. What will you hold to, what can you know is true... let's find out.
John 11:1-44- Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, ''Lord, he whom you love is ill.'' 4 But when Jesus heard it he said, ''This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.''
Here we have a family Jesus is close to. Lazarus ...
