The Threat of Sin Within (3 of 13)
Series: Unstoppable - The Book of Acts
Josh Malone
Acts 4:32-37, 5:1-16
Summarize Acts 1-4.
Today's text is hard. It doesn't take place on the mountaintop of miracles but in the valley of sin. Today, we see the church threatened from within. We see sin in the camp.
Today we see how serious God takes sin, the purity of His church, and we see the subtlety and danger of sin in our own lives.
As has been said, the churches greatest threat comes from within. I'd say also for our lives personally that is true as well. It's the sin in our own heart we have to be leery of. As a community its the sin w/in our community we have to be most concerned with.
Acts 4:32-37- Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. 33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35 and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. 36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, 37 sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet.
A picture of a church swept up in the grace of God, empowered by the Spirit, living on mission. It's a church filled with people who BELIEVED.
Life Change- In the previous chapters these people are described as those who killed the Author of Life. Now they're believers and radically unified, loving, generous people.
John Piper says of this passage, ''Two of the effects of believing in Jesus are that the heart is loosened in relationship to things and tightened in its relationship to people. ...
