ILLUS.- In 1956 Dwight Eisenhower was up for re-election against Adlai(LAY) Stevenson. Eisenhower had already beaten Stevenson in the '52 election. - In '56 JFK has made a run at VP of the Dem. party during the Dem. Conv. and came up short. His brother Robert ended up working on the campaign of Stevenson. In the recent book ''Road to Camelot'' which is the story what ultimately became the JFK 1960 campaign, the authors share that Robert Kennedy while working on the Stevenson campaign was not impressed with him as a leader. In fact after an sitting in on an all day meeting with senior campaign staff Robert Kennedy wrote the day was ''a real eye-opener for me. It was a conference that really disturbed me as far as thinking that he should be president of the US.''--- The authors go on to note how years later Kennedy woudl confess to a Stevenson speech writer that went on to work in the JFK admin. that when push came to shove behind the curtain... he voted for the republican Eisenhower.

Why would he do that? Leadership matters. When push came to serve, he couldn't imagine the man he campaigned for as President, so he voted for the other guy who already was.
