ILLUS.- I remember seeing the LOTR in the theatre years ago. Having not read the books I didn't really know what I was in for. As I'm sitting in the theatre watching the first movie, about the time it gets good... it ends. It just goes off! -- It drove me nuts. -- I'm like ''Who ends a movie like that?!'' And people were all like... ''It's how the books ends, you have to wait now for the story to pickup in part two.'' -- I'm like this is nuts, that's like 3 years away. - I didn't have the patience for that kind of movie watching. I like a finished story.
Sometimes in cinema... and sometimes in books... the story ends abruptly, not answering all your questions. It may be for effect, it may be because the author has said all they intended... and it may be because the story is to be continued.
As Acts comes to an end you will see it ends sort of abruptly. Part of that is because Luke will have said all God wanted Him to say. Another part of that is that the story of Acts is continuing today. The story is isn't finished. -- The church continues, the gospel goes forward.
The story of Acts continues today as the Holy Spirit works through me and you, through the local church scattered over the world as we seek to advance the gospel and make disciples. -- The gospel is still unhindered. The mission is still unfinished. -- There are people that still have not heard. And our Lord has not returned... and until He does we are called, we are commissioned to go and make disciples.
As we pick up in Acts 8. Last week we saw the Apostle Paul meet the Ephesian elders in Miletus to say good bye. He leaves from there headed to Jerusalem, knowing that trouble awaits him there. He arrives and as he continues ministering there he is arrested and ultimately we will see sent to Rome.
Luke's gospel for the last several chapters is concerned with Paul going to Rome. -- I ...
