A Leader's Frightening Fall
Robert Dawson
2 Samuel 11
Years ago, a man and his wife decided to see a movie at the local drive-in. The husband, who was a little bit of a skinflint, decided to save a few dollars on admission. When they neared the theatre, they pulled the car over and the husband crawled into the trunk. The wife pulled up to the gate and paid for one ticket. Once they were inside, she went around to the back of their old car to open the trunk and let her husband out, but she encountered a small problem. She didn't have the keys to the trunk, which back in the day were different from the keys to the ignition.
After several failed efforts, the wife was forced to call for help but rather than call a lock-smith, she called a rescue service. I don't know how many rescue personnel showed up, but one thing was for sure, people knew something was going on and the drive-in knew they had tried to cheat them out of a ticket. Well, the rescue personnel were not as discreet, neat or as gentle with the trunk as a locksmith would have been and they damaged the trunk getting the man out.
By the time they freed the man from his self-imposed prison, the couple had missed the movie, embarrassed themselves and run up a rather significant repair bill. [Bob Deffinbaugh]
They learned the hard way that your sin has a way of finding you out. (Maybe, ratting you out would be a better description). What is hidden is brought to the light.
This is a lesson that we will be confronted with today as we look at one of God's great servants, David, a man who stopped following God's heart. Even though it is a familiar story, one most of us could easily recount for one another, it serves as a powerful warning about the pull and danger of sin. As we follow this story, we not only find some heart-breaking consequences but grace and redemption as well.
