James 1:5-6
King David conquered the nations around Israel and as a result Israel became the largest and most powerful nation in the Middle East in 1,000 BC. When he died his Solomon reigned in his place. We do not know how old Solomon was when he became king, but it seems he was 20-25 years old as he married Pharaoh's daughter.
It was not long after he became king, he asked God for wisdom. Wisdom - Heb. ability to make right decisions at the right time. I Kings 3:9 Give your servant an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?
The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom and not long life or riches and wealth or victory over his enemies. God said (3:12), ''Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind.'' Solomon spoke over 3,000 proverbs (4:32), many of which were included in the book of Proverbs.
Proverbs Proverbs are not detailed instructions on how to live your life. Rather, they give as general principles of how to live a godly life.
The first and most important principle is respect for God. Proverbs 1:9 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. This verse is so fundamental it is quoted again in Proverbs 9:10 and Job 28:28 and Psalm 11:10. Without fear of God people choose to do whatever evil they set their heart to do.
