Turn with me to 1 John 3:16-18

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in world or talk but in deed and in truth.

INTRODUCTION
1. Tomorrow we celebrate Memorial Day. For many of you it is a much needed, long awaited, 3-day weekend. And tomorrow grills will be fired up. Pools will open. Friends will gather. And the summer will officially begin. Don’t forget, however, that when we bring out the grills, the deck furniture, the bathing suits and more, we must also welcome in the mosquitos and the humidity. You can’t have one without the other!
2. As exciting as all of this is, minus the mosquitos and the humidity, however, we all know that Memorial Day is much more than burgers, pools, beaches, and friends. Memorial Day marks a day of sacrifice. Memorial Day is a day that we remember those who have paid the ultimate price in service to our nation. We remember those who have given and sacrificed their lives. It’s a day that will be difficult for some. For many, it will be seemingly unbearable. Tomorrow, whether you have been impacted directly, indirectly, or seemingly not at all, let’s take the time to slow down and reflect on the cost that was paid by men and women for a cause they believed in.
3. So with Memorial Day being tomorrow, I want us to take some time and think about a topic that is central to the Christian belief. A topic that is really the foundation of our very belief structure. It is the topic of sacrifice. Specifically, I want us to ponder, consider, and dwell on the sacrifice that Jesus made for us.
