''In the 1870s archaeologists uncovered a giant, red granite obelisk in the sands of Egypt. They dubbed it 'Cleopatra's Needle,' and gave it to London...This 68-foot high shaft was erected in London on the banks of the Thames River. At the base of the shaft a time vault was placed. Several items of the times were included in the vault: some coins and clothing; children's toys; a newspaper; pictures of the 12 prettiest women in London. A committee was appointed to include the greatest single verse in the Bible. The committee was unanimous in their decision and in the 220 known languages of the time, they placed the verse John 3.16 in the time capsule.'' I don't know that many of us would argue with their choice. John 3.16 is probably the best- known verse in the Bible. It is succinct, beautiful and rich in meaning. Herschel Hobbs called it ''the Gospel in superlatives.'' Martin Luther called it ''the Bible in miniature.'' A.T Robertson, noted Greek scholar referred to it as ''the Little Gospel.''

John 3.16 - For God so loved the World, that God gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.

There is more in this verse than we realize. It tells us about God and mankind. It reveals what's required for salvation, how to receive it and points us to the hope filled promises of salvation and our horrific fate if we reject it. The grand narrative of Scripture wrapped up in this single verse.

For all its richness, it is a verse, because of casual and careless use due familiarity, that has lost some of its luster. Last week we held it up to the light of God's Spirit so He could once again illuminate its brilliance before our eyes so that we would be awed by the glory of its truths.
