Colossians 1:1-8
Good morning. I am truly excited to begin a brand new series today. For the next nine weeks, we will be walking through the book of Colossians. Why did I choose to preach this book? Well, because I've noticed that we Christians sometimes miss the main point. If you think about the word ''Christian'' or ''Christianity,'' they are clearly forms of what word? (this is not a trick question). They're based on the word ''Christ.'' Which means that when you look at Christians, everything about them should be focused on...what? On Christ! But sometimes that's not the case. Have you noticed that? And as a result, we become known not by what we're for-Jesus-but by all the things we're against. When Jesus was here, he was known for his love-even people who strongly disagreed with him knew that he loved them. Christians don't always have that reputation, do we?
So the book of Colossians calls us back to the center of what this faith is about. And I don't know exactly what that's going to mean for you-some of you are all-in; some of you are half-in; some of you are on the fence; some of you are here today because your girlfriend dragged you here; some of you are, right now, checking Facebook on your phone (I know-I can see you). All kinds of people in this room. But here's what we all have in common: the thing we need most, right now, is Jesus. And Colossians brings us face to face with Jesus.
So-just a little background: the book of Colossians is technically not a book; it's a letter-written by the Apostle Paul to a group of people living in a city called Colosse, which is in modern-day Turkey. Paul had never personally been there, but he knew about the church there, and he knew about the issues they were facing. So as he sat in a prison cell in Rome, he was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write them this letter. So let's jump right into it-Colossians chapte ...
