Colossians 4:2-6
Today we are finishing up our study of the book of Colossians, and the reason I chose this book is that I've noticed that Christians sometimes miss the main point. Even though the word ''Christian'' is obviously a form of the word-everybody?-''Christ,'' sometimes we're not focused on Christ very much, and sometimes we don't resemble him very much. And so, in our culture, we can become known not for what we're for-Jesus-but for all the things we're against. Which is really sad. So Colossians calls us back to the core of our faith, which is Jesus.
So today is the last message in the series. Paul is at the end of the letter. And of all the things he could leave them with, here's what he focuses on at the very end of the letter: How should we relate to people who don't share the same faith that we have in Christ? That's the last thing he talks about. How should we relate to people who don't share our faith?
That's a really relevant question, don't you think? Because we are living in a country that's very pluralistic. We're living in a country that values freedom of religion, and that values separation of church and state-and those are really good things, right? So in this pluralistic culture, the unwritten rule is, ''It's fine to have faith; it's great if it works for you; but please, do not...'' What? ''Don't push it on other people!'' Just keep it to yourself, and we'll all get along much better.
You know what the problem is with that approach? If people followed that approach, none of the people who are getting baptized today would be getting baptized-because they would have never heard this message of hope. This church would not be here. I would not be doing what I'm doing. If people who follow Christ just kept quiet about their faith, the reality is, the church never would have made it out of the first century! Because from the very star ...
