Proverbs 17:17 - A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Proverbs 18:24 - A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

The Title of the Sermon Series, Friendship, The Sweetest Influence is the slogan of my Fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta at Auburn University. I always liked the slogan, and I was always kind of amazed at how FIJI worked. I mean you had guys that didn't know each other, coming to college, not knowing what to expect, not knowing anyone. They find this fraternity. They find these other guys, and after one semester, these guys are living together, and they are best friends, and a lot of these friendships go on. I mean, still to this day some of my best friends are the friends that I went through that with.

I think that is to one degree or another instructive as to what I want to talk about today. If you were with us last week, we started a series on Friendship, and last week we talked about the Essence of Friendship, and we said that friendship is union that comes by candor (or vulnerability), constancy, and sacrifice. We said that friendship both displays God, and that friendship is like God.

When you are little, of course you are shaped mostly by your parents. I am reading the new Dorris Kerns Goodwin book on Leadership and she writes on Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson and how they learned leadership, and it's interesting to see how their very different upbringings shaped them, but when they came of age, when they became adults, they were shaped mostly by their friends, and the same is true of you.
