In this text, we're overhearing a command given to a pastor. The Apostle Paul is writing to a young pastor named Timothy. And the central command he gives is just three words - ''Preach the word.'' The central theme of this text is ''preaching.''

The reason the church exists is because of the gospel. The gospel creates the Church. We aren't a bunch of religious people who like to get together and be religious. We're a bunch of sinners who have been rescued by Jesus. Now we worship God in both everyday life, and together on Sunday mornings.

This morning, we're going to look at ''Preaching.'' Or, really, preaching and listening.

Why Do We Do This?

The central command is in verse 2, ''preach the word.'' Our desire to be faithful to that command is the reason why we are here right now. It is the reason why we gather together every Sunday from 10:15-11am.

What's unique about this morning is that we're actually going to think directly about what we're doing during these 45 minutes.

Usually we spend this time thinking about something other than what we're doing during these 45 minutes. But we don't often spend this time thinking about what we're doing during this time.

It's a very strange thing in our culture to have a group of people gather together every weekend to sit together and listen to someone talk.

At some point, we need to ask the question, ''why do we do this?''

Maybe some of us are content to not think about it. It's just what we do on Sundays.

But that's not going to be enough for some of us. Some of us have wondered why we don't do something else with our time. For example, why don't we spend the whole time singing and praying? Does it matter if we come for the first part and skip this part? Or vice versa?
