This is our last Sunday in the book of Hosea. Hosea draws attention to the holiness and heart of God. And last week we saw how both of those were uniquely connected.

When we think of God's holiness, we think of his moral purity that leads him to reject sin. But Hosea shows us that we're also to think of his steadfast love that leads him to pursue sinners.

His holiness is his uniqueness; his set-apartness. And one of the ways that God is unique and set-apart from us is his love. When any of us would cut ties with someone who deeply and consistently rejects us; God still has a heart of love for his people. He has an infinite capacity for love. He is holy - or unique - in his love.

And it is his heart of love that stands behind Advent.

It is why Advent exists. Advent means coming - The coming of Christ at Christmas. The deepest reason why Christ came is because of the desire in God's heart. The desire to display his glory and show how much he loves us.

Hosea shows us what happened when Israel, for hundreds of years, rejected this love. Their covenant with God was like a marriage covenant. They were bound to God in faithfulness and love. And yet when they forgot him and valued other things above him, they committed spiritual adultery.

Yet God still remains committed. We saw in Hosea 11 that although Israel deserves complete destruction, His heart recoils at the thought and his compassion grows warm. So he promises that one day will restore them to himself.

And after hundreds of years of silence, God's people waited for Advent. And it came in Jesus. He was born to accomplish all that is in the heart of God for his people. Jesus is here because he refuses to give his people what they deserve. He will redeem them. That is what Christmas is about.
