This is sanctity of life Sunday, and we're beginning a new series in the book of Exodus. And the two relate in striking ways. These opening chapters of Exodus introduce us to the book, and they draw attention to the value of human life from the womb onward. We'll see the connection.

If you have been a Christian for a while, you may be familiar with Exodus.

Many of us are familiar with the basic event - the deliverance of the Israelites out of Egypt.

But we can easily mistake familiarity with that event with familiarity with the actual book. We need to remember that when the Bible narrates events, it is not just the event that is important. It is also the recorded narrative of that event that is important. The text itself - the written narrative of the event - is what the Bible says is God's word to us. Jesus claimed that the Old Testament was God's very words. The event happened; but the text gives us the meaning and significance of that event.

In other words, we want to know not only what happened, but why it matters.

WHY EXODUS

Here are three reasons why we're going to be in the book of Exodus for the next four months.

First, to understand the story of the Bible.

The book of Exodus is a major moment in what we call ''redemptive history.''

It's close to the start of the year. A few weeks ago Phil Owen spoke on spiritual disciplines. He emphasized the importance of having a regular rhythm of personal Bible reading. I hope you have given that consideration.

My hope is that our time in Exodus would help us with this discipline. I have found that one of the greatest hindrances for people reading the Bible is lack of familiarity. You open up the Bible, you start reading a book in the Old Testament, and you have no idea what is going on. It's unfamiliar.
