MADE FOR RELATIONAL FLOURISHING

This text exists because we were made for relational flourishing. God made us to live humanely together.

We haven't done this well. Every nation and state and community and family has fallen short. ??But Jesus came to make it happen. And the one place on earth where he is working to bring it about is the church. Every church is to be a humane and relationally flourishing community.

This text in Exodus gives us a picture of this. It is a pointer toward what God would do through Jesus. This points toward what will be a reality in the new creation; and what his beginning now in the church.

THE RELEVANCE OF THE LAW

But there are some barriers between this text and us.

Christians have an interesting relationship with the commands of the Old Testament. How are we supposed to relate to them? What is their relevance today?

Are we supposed to put them on billboards? Are we supposed to put them in schools and courthouses? Are they intended to be a timeless summary of God's expectations for humanity? Or for the church today? Were they intended to be the plan of salvation; if you keep the law, you'll be saved?
?The answer to each of these questions is: no.

We'll see seven insights about Israel's law. The first two: Bigger picture - how we relate to the Old Testament law as Christians. The next several: What we learn from these laws about God and the kind of community that reflects his character and flourishes.


I. THE LAW IS NOT OUR COVENANT

Here's the first insight: The law is not our covenant. It was temporary, not eternal.
