Exodus 23

Is this text worth spending time with?

It's easy to miss the significance of all of this. These chapters seem dry, repetitive, overly detailed, and mundane. The style seems boring.

But when we think of this in light of biblical theology (seeing how this fits into the story of the Bible), it is actually a beautiful and wonderful picture.

This text is like an instruction manual. It's giving the details of how to build something. Nobody think instruction manuals are beautiful. But if you use it to build a Ferrari from scratch, the end result is going to be beautiful. And the sketches in the manual get you there.

In this case, we're reading the instruction manual for the tabernacle... and the tabernacle itself is still a symbol for what is most beautiful. So, this is more like an instruction manual for a toy model Ferrari.

Here's what the tabernacle is about: The tabernacle is about our true home. C. S. Lewis wrote about the longing in everyone for true home.

''In speaking of [a] desire for our own far off country, which we find in ourselves even now, I feel a certain shyness. I am almost committing an indecency. I am trying to rip open the inconsolable secret in each one of you-the secret which hurts so much that you take your revenge on it by calling it names like Nostalgia and Romanticism... These things-the beauty, the memory of our own past-are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshipers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited'' (C. S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory).

What is he talking about? He's saying that every one of us longs to be home. We have a longing for a true home.
